Discussion about NFBSP's Dedicated Server Script (DSS)

Gameservers + DSS 2

Postby spxter on Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:00 pm

Hey

I've recently bought a server and co-located it in Germany (Because of tax difference and i did really get a cheap offer to place my server over there).

specs
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
2.048 MB
120 GB

Anyway i want to run a NightFire server just to test if this is stable enough. The only thing is, is that my dedicated server has Linux installed and I dont want to install windows server 2003 over. I heard that it was possible to run NF on LINUX using WINE. Does anyone here knows anything about wine?

And will DSS2 work smoothly over there? The purpose of these servers will be 24/7 neutral vs neutral servers which can be controlled via an online control panel. The panel allows to shut down the server, restart, load a different server config and a few more features. If this all will run smooth i will get my 2nd dedicated to fully host and provide nightfire more servers for cheap prices :)

But the main thing is - does NF and DSS2 run on linux using wine? Or any other programm which allows to run windows apps. on linux? I got Linux Debian btw - can change it to all versions IF needed in order to run NF servers

Nightfire may work on wine, but DSS is more complex, as it needs .net 2.0 framework, and I think wine has problems installing the .net framework. You can try "CrossOver", made by wine creators, which is a more complete wine (and shareware), but I still don't know if it will work there. You should ask Bier, as he had similar settings, he told ne about "WMWare" (not VMWare), but I never tested it...

Other option is having an X86 emulator, like QEMU, which would emulate any PC machine (like windows, but inside linux). I don't like this option as it takes much system resources, but it's the more compatible way.
