New Gametypes Possible?

A combined mixture of external applications, nightfire internal commands, and map entities could be used to make new gametypes possible for NFBL use...

External applications could be used to prevent unfair play and cheating, such as executing a normal command when prohibited.

Nightfire internal commands could be used to place the server in a mode where everyone can hurt eachother, everyone looks the same, no names show up on the hud, the armour/weapons/ammunition doesnt regenerate and when you die you stay dead until you reconnect.

Map entities could be used to add certain special effects to the gametype such as constant loosing of health during a round so that to survive you must run for armour and fight for it.

Now to business:
Something could be done where there are maps with a trigger_hurt covering the whole map. This would make it harder to survive and as the weapons/ammo/armor doesnt regenerate so players can fight for it, it's difficult to reconnect after you've been killed and go on to win :wink:

yeah they would be nice, but they would be too much work for you :cry:

there are already new gametypes, like last man standing romania.. but i do think youre on to something, and that it is a very good idea. need some creative ideas though..

maybe gametypes like

"king of the hill" - people score points for being in a certain area (the longer theyre in the area, the more points)

"assasination" - the "assasin" changes every 2-3 minutes (or when hes killed, etc.) and they have to kill as many people as possible in that time. others can still kill, but if youre not the assasin, it doesnt add to your score.

"bomb defusal" - like in counter strike, one team places a bomb in a set area, and has to stop the other team defusing it.

"noob defense" - each time has a predifined "noob" who cant shoot or use weapons, they can only punch. while some of the team have to guard this "noob", the rest of the team have to go out and kill the other teams "noob". if a "noob" is killed, then the whole team dies, and a different player on that team is chosen to be the "noob"


I got some of these ideas from other games, although i made some up myself. i really dont have much knowledge on this kind of thing, so i may have just said a load of stuff that is completely impossible. however, its still ideas :D

1. Hmm the 'last noob standing' gametype sounds good... Could probably do something like that. But it may need a lot of external tinkering...

Im not sure how do such things but as DSS tinkers with the game, tres may indeed be able to help.

I know its possible to have 1 person spawn as the noob but i would need to be able to find out who the noob is on each team so that the enternal app can scan the log for when that person dies... Then restart :D

But we will need new maps for it :shock:


2.King of the hill sounds like a good idea too but it may not be possible as i know no way of gaining points by standing in a designated area... :cry:


3.No way of preventing people from changing team to play with the assassin... But it may be possible. I'm not sure about how to block the gaining of points either :shock:

well the assasin mode i was thinking of it just being a dm (mp_teamplay 0) so everyone can kill everyone, but only the assasin can gain points for it.

and the noob defense, why not use maps like ctf_romania but take away the flags? (instead of guarding a flag, you guard a noob :D)

I'm not going to release the DSS Code for that purpose, get it in your head.

And that game mode wouldn't be loved by people, as when everybody dies, the map has to be restarted, which would cause 15 wasted seconds...

It's simple: get your ideas to work without people having to do anything complicated/annoying (yes, reconnecting is annoying enough). I guess the point at which you can modify the most are the maps. You can set up some maps to do crazy stuff. Just keep it simple and easy for everyone to understand and play.

People always appreciate new gamemodes.

NF does keep records of how long a player held a certain power-up. You can probarly work from that direction, using the powerups.

there is a skull mode in Halo, where a player holds a skull, and gets points for however long they hold it for, and during that time they can only mellee attack (with the skull)

something like that could be possible maybe?

I never said I was gona force tres in to anything... (Don't worry :wink: )

I can imagine that how long someone has something for can be monitored, but how long they are in a place doesnt seem to be a possibility does it?

The noob defence... The trouble is that we cant use romania because there is nothing to stop the noob getting weapons from the spawn rooms but wait a second... Developer 2 also displays when something dies, maybe program AIs to be the noobs and monitor for when they die? :wink: But then... another noob on the same team might come along and kill it... :shock:

The halo-skull thingy, as there is a map entity to strip a player's weapons, it may be possible?

because you cant target it at a specific player, its when anyone walks through it... Besides, the noob would just go and get more weapons :P
But wait... If we take all the weapons from the map and put a load of them in to the player_equip the players will get them when they spawn and there can be a trigger_once which the unlucky noob runs in to and gets his weapons stripped...

But maybe we can make it so that there are 2 scores displayed, 1 for each team, displaying how many times they've killed the noob :wink: . So it may be possible to make a mod of the CTF gametype where the flags are removed but some external app gives points when the noob dies... Would that be possible?

The one thign here I'd love to see would be Assassination. I've whiled away endless hours on the PS2 laughing at Scaramanga, Oddjob, Wai Lin and Nick Nack backstabbing each other... :lol: :razz:

The other ideas sound great; Protect the Noob would be so much fun. However, King of the Hill, I know from experience, does get a little tiresome after a while.
