DSS for NFBL servers

Discussion about NFBSP's Dedicated Server Script (DSS)

DSS for NFBL servers

Postby Tras on Tue May 15, 2007 9:18 pm

Here I continue the discussion of DSS that I began in the thread about using mods in nightfire.

Suming all up, new DSS updates will include an anticheat system (like Punkbuster or Cheating Death) that won't allow any kind of cheating and will have Nightfire like if it was reinstalled, without any mod and only for NFBL games (in normal servers, players will have their mods enabled).
It's supposed to stop aimbots, speedhacks and wallhacks, also, it would be able to switch between clients (1.0 and 1.1) in dss servers.

So, any question?

Disaster? lol, only on nfbl matches, your nightfire will be like reinstalled. After the matches, it will be ok, no need to reinstall your mod.

It is supposed to have fair play and same opportunities to kill, with no viual advantages.

I don't even care much about the mods but it stops wallhack/speedhack/aimbot so thats way more important then playing with or without a ww2 mod...
There is only 1 n00b in nf and thats Suppan00b

Yes, I don't think it's such a problem not having a mod in official matches. I use the HL2 Mod and I like it too, but if I had to battle in one of those servers I would not cry for that :p

Hi Tres could you explain a bit more about the reinstall. From what I understand nothing is actually uninstalled or reinstalled but just deactivated and switched to new files and settings of the anticheat system?

Also a question about Mod sounds, will they be changed to normal Nightfire sounds? as I like the weapon sounds from the HL2 mod.

The idea that I have is creating a "mod" folder that consists in making Nightfire default. It is supported in nightfire, as it is really a copy from Half life and counter strike, so instead loading the bond folder it will load a nfbl folder (starting bond.exe with -game nfbl arguments)

My program will generate its own assets.007 (that has to get files from the other in bond folder, but first validating that the assets.007 was not modified) and downloading NFBL maps that will be used for playing.
Yes, all sounds will be from Nightfire, unless you want to do an exception here (I have no problem about it, because sounds really do not make much advantage).

I can do this thing: During the nfbl "mod" folder generation for nightfire, the player will be asked whether he prefers using his original sound folder (that will be incorporated to the new assets.007 file) or using nightfire's default.

That would be cool if you could do that for sounds as I forgot too about the intro music 'frontend_ectest.ogg' which I have changed too. If it's a lot of work though don't just do it for my benefit lol.

All the other parts though sound awesome

LoL it's no problem, as I could allow the modded menus too.
Anyway I can't start developing it yet, I am in exams so in a few weeks we will see.

(Once I start, I'll be very fast :D)

I think it would be a good idea to allow clients to be able to hide their location/IP so that it cant be displayed to all other users of the server, the host/admins only

I agree that the NFBSP DSS client should disable some more-or-less obsolete features as most of the server messages are not necessary in NFBL matches but I think this is not really something new.

Anyhow, about IP + location display in general:
Some people said those informations are something private and shan't be showed as a server message for everyone in a server. The IP of your connection and the location of your ISP are indeed NO private informations from the moment you connect to the internet and especially, join a multiplayer server.

The real location of your house cannot be traced back by programs over the internet. It is only possible to check up the ISP, the server of your provider, to which you connected and look up the location in case it is registered. It is the same function that e.g. Gamespy utilizes in order to display those little flags in the server list.

yeh i kno that but cant there be something that disallows people from typing in the !whois for your name and finding out who u r? cuz it makes it a little annoying in a few situations...

(oh and btw, after 12 mins, my serverlog started really lagging my serv and as soon as i closed the log everything was ok)
