Binary Brush Dimensions?

Postby UltimateSniper on Tue May 20, 2008 8:27 am

Hey all, I'm wondering... Why do people prefer binary sizes for brushes in maps? eg, 64x128 or somin... How would it help with anything?

only thing i see is that it may make it easier to resize textures properly to fit the faces right as textures also have binary dimensions but that isnt really so worth it

sum1 enlighten me or are they just preferred as the grid size can be changed to binary sizes?

well u said i never taught u anything about mapping...

binary dimentions, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16<-smallest, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096
and after that i think it gets rather dumb... but i think smallest rendered is 16x16

any1 gona tell me an answer to my question?

Acc helped me get started with Gearcraft...I took two days to learn how to use it and I made Dm_cube in less than a week.

I have no clue what you're talking about, lol, so I should not vote.

Although, I am learning quickly, I am nearly done with my second map.

I'm not telling people what it is, but I'm making a map from Goldeneye, like Complex, Cradle, Facility and GEStreets have done.

well those maps were basically converted from those games for nf... so are u 'making' ir or 'porting'(converting) it? :P

well usually in maps, blocks have sizes of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and etc... not just 300

I see what you mean, those were the snap coordinates..yeah, I guess I made it difficult on myself by not having the snap feature on.

Faster mapping, and also useful if you are going to compare and measure sizes between the game and real life. Having your maps sorted to the grid prevents map leaks too.

But anyways, it depends on likes and dislikes, some people want to have all tidied, and some not, like me, and that's why I don't create maps
