Nightfire Model Compiler (.mdl V14)

Discussion about Nightfire Modifications (Mods).

How badly do you want a model compiler, if not for yourself then the community?

Nightfire Model Compiler (.mdl V14)

Postby UltimateSniper on Wed Aug 15, 2007 3:29 pm

Nightfire game modifying (modding) has been around for a long time but now, it is loosing its fun for many of us. Mappers are required to try to keep maps big whilst adding detail and complexity to their work.

Nightfire modding can be brought to a new dimention and maps can be made far larger by the introduction of a V14 model compiler. Since tres released the map/sprite/font/model tools early last year ( ), we have encountered a problem: the model compiler we have is for version 11 model files which were made during the development of nightfire, not version 14 which is used by the released nightfire.

As known by quite a few people now, a friendly fellow commonly known as Philip has been working on a model compiler (believe it or not, it's your choice  ). Starting from the little information on the header supplied to him by tres and ford, he has written his own using the Version 11 compiler to help him. He claims to be 80% finished but has struck a pole in the last section(s) of the conversion. He claims that the unknown part(s) of the V14 model is/are far more complicated than rocket science.

I've been looking for helpers to help progress the project more however I've encountered people with too little interest and where that was plentiful, I've encountered people almost like me who know absolutely nothing about model files. Having looked at nightfire models several times to modify them for the DM_Rygaards map I can tell that it deffinitely isn't quite as easily identifiable or as spread out as a .bsp V42 map file (unfortunately  ). Now that Philip's threatening to delete his (c++) compiler out of fustration, we need help soon. Because of my little success in finding anyone who can/will help I thought I would post this here. Anyone who can help is preferably required to have a knowledge of C++ and some of how model files are structured.

Now or never

(PS. I didnt post that I hate ulti cuz for writing this much he clearly doesnt deserve to be hated this time... )

A model compiler can be done in VB.NET and some other languages too, plus they need to know the SMD (preferably from HL2) and MDL version 14 structures

Help

Postby Philip on Thu Aug 16, 2007 5:38 am

Hey, I am the author of this Compiler/Decompiler and I would appreciate it if someone helped me with this, or provided me some information. If anyone has any ideas or questions then feel free to contact me.

This job can be done in almost any programming language that exists, thats what they are created for.

What about some details on further programming the decompiler?

What is it capable of, by now? How did you work on it? What are the major differences between version 11 and 14? Which problems are you facing right now?

You sound like you are more interested in the decompiler than the compiler, what should be top priority right now ?

It is capable of writing parts of the .qc file for the model and also writing parts of the .smd. Those messing parts are the problems I am facing now

Obvious priority shall be the compiler, a decompiler won't be nice because NF models do not have much resolution and not much quality.

but they are a start and it would be nice to be able to modify the current ones so that you can make funny shaped things in ur default maps and (eg in guns) to see where they should be on the graph :P

If you want examples, try Half Life Models :)

I always appreciate when someone does a cool and seful progam for NF and so do the others.A new decompiler would be great and helpeful to many guys out there. The problem is it will need to be known and you would have to do it very well.We need some new programs in NF but only if they are well made and useful ...and easy tpo handle,in my opinion.
Thats all for now
